THE KITCHEN: WHY WE CHOSE IKEA

The plan.

When we started the kitchen process, we knew from living on Union that the only way to achieve the look we wanted on a budget was to stick with IKEA.  I can't tell you how much research I did to assure myself this was the right decision. Luckily, Brandon's new office had an IKEA kitchen built in, so it was nice to actually use it for some time to decide what we did/didn't like about it.

Unlike the Union house, I don't have a gazillion rooms anymore, so we are trying to be as smart with our space as possible. It sounds totally weird, but I love sitting in the kitchen to work, so having the kitchen double as a workspace was really important. I was totally set on an island, but because we decided to use IKEA cabinets, they weren't quite fitting right and the island ended up being really small. In the end, we actually left the appliances in the exact same spot they were when we bought the house. This REALLY helped save cost on plumbing/gas/electrical and ended up working better in the long run as a peninsula. Here is where we landed on the layout:

If you are planning to go with an IKEA kitchen, I highly suggest making a few trips if you're not to far away. They run an AMAZING sale twice a year (20% off $4,500+ or 10%  off $2,500-) and we knew we would be able to meet the August 25th deadline with time to spare. I hear a lot of people get very overwhelmed by IKEA, but we have learned to focus on one or two things each time we go – whether that be one room or something like lighting or rugs.

The first trip was about a month ago to specifically look at the kitchen models, doors, hardware, inserts, etc. We vowed not to buy anything and only took photos of what we each liked to talk about it later. They also have a really handy kitchen planning brochure that has examples and steps to take when planning your kitchen. This method allowed for both of us to make decisions without having a marital meltdown over what type of faucet we wanted to get.

After lots and lots of research, we decided to go with the ABSTRAKT High Gloss White cabinets with solid butcher block countertops that we plan to stain dark (more on that later). Here was our inspiration photo:

For our kitchen, we decided to only do lower cabinets. We love the look of open wood shelving for my dish obsession, so we will be installing dark wood floating shelves above like so:

Placing your kitchen order.

After all of our meticulous planning and debates, we were ready to bite the bullet. I knew that with only days left of the sale, a Wednesday afternoon was going to be our safest bet...so I convinced my sisters to take a quick road trip with me to place my order! I was happy I did because it was good to hear opinions from someone who hasn't been kitchen planning for 3 months (and did end up making a couple nice changes).

I knew that 20% off was going to be amazing, but I had no idea how much was actually included. You can literally get anything for your kitchen down to the cutting board included in this deal. If I had more time, I would have focsed more on the inserts, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to use the kitchen to know exactly what I need anyway.

Even with my kitchen plan done in advance using IKEA's handy online kitchen planner...it still took about 3 hours to place the order. The representatives are very helpful and look through all of your plans carefully to make sure you aren't missing anything. We opted for the delivery since it was only $139 to our house which made way more sense than renting a truck, paying for gas, and spending a day at IKEA packing and unpacking a truck.

Here is what was included in my order:

  • All lower cabinets (including 2 corner cabinets) w/ ABSTRAKT doors
  • NUMERAR Solid butcherblock countertops
  • All hardware (LANSA
  • A built-in dishwasher
  • A DOMSJO single bowl sink
  • A HJUVIK faucet
  • KORTVARIG Extractor Hood
  • Drawer inserts (Utensil Tray, Knife tray, spice trays, dividers, etc.)
  • Sink Inserts (Cutting Board and Veggie Strainer)
  • Drawer Dampers

Our entire kitchen came in under $4,500 (with the 20% off) and a savings of $1,021.92!  For an entire kitchen including a couple appliances and delivery - I would say that is a STEAL.  Moral of the story? Wait for the kitchen sale if you can :)

Appliances

At one time during this kitchen planning process, we went shopping online at Sears and figured it would cost between $5K - $7K on appliances. I just thought that was a little ridiculous and knew my magic google fingers would help me find the same (or better) for less. Since we have some time, I'm constantly on watch for appliances. My advice would be to start with your favorite appliance and try to find a match for the rest.

For example, I really wanted a nice industrial looking stove. I scoured craigslist and lost a few beauties, but finally came across a Jenn Air dual-fuel stainless steel range. It didn't look that great from the pictures, but I got the model number from the guy over the phone and looked online to see if I could get replacement parts to make it look like new if I needed to. Sure enough, everything I needed was available. So, my craigslist pal, Ali and I borrowed my dads truck and road-tripped it to Big Rapids.

I was thrilled to see that the stove was actually in better condition than it looked in the pictures! It just needed a good scrub down and a few of the cooking grates replaced and she is good as new! It turns out the guy is a contractor and this was removed from one of his jobs. He said the owners paid $4,000 for it (he was asking $650) and I talked him down to $550! Here she is:

Like I mentioned earlier – start with your favorite appliance and then try to find a match. Even though you may chose stainless steel, every brand is slightly different in color and texture. Since my stove is Jenn-Air and my refrigerator is right next to it, I want to make sure I find a Jenn-Air brand to match it.

A lot of people don't know this, but Sears actually has several outlets near Detroit and you can shop online. I'm really using the website to see if they have what I'm looking for and will make a trip to see in person before actually buying. They only note the scratch and dings and rarely have pictures of how noticeable they are. It's worth it if you can save a couple thousand on appliances!

As far as the dishwasher and sink, we decided to go IKEA. I really didn't want to fuss with having to custom fit anything into the cabinets. I have heard that the customer service is horrible, but for a 5-Year warranty on the dishwasher AND they are actually made by Whirlpool...I figured I'd risk it. We also did the integrated dishwasher with a gloss white panel on the front, so that matching the stainless wasn't a concern.

Well, she's all ordered and will be here September 3! I'll keep you all posted on the progress and any changes we make during the install process!

WEEK 2: PROGRESS PICS

We have been slowly picking away at the landscaping every night when it's cooler outside. I was SO happy to start with a blank canvas, but digging out grass is no easy task. We've had so many people stop and comment on how much better it looks, so it's good motivation to keep going!

Still a long way to go, but I can't wait to see everything come in nice and full this spring!

I've also taken a shot of the temporary stairs! We're hoping to have the framing done this week, so plumbing, electric, and drywall can happen soon.

TWO CRAZY WEEKS

Well, this is it. Last day of staycation and I think it's the first day that I didn't wear yoga pants and have dust or dirt on my face. It's crazy to think that just two short weeks ago I was standing in the Union house wondering how this was all going to happen. Crazy!

Now that the demo is complete (yep, you read that right!) – it's really starting to come to life. We have been at the house after dark the past 3 days, so I plan to take pics of the latest progress when I water the flowers before work tomorrow.

Our biggest project must-have was the new stairs! Since our garage/entry to the house is through the basement, we needed a temporary set of stairs to get us by until we can make a decision on design/materials. Here is the finished framing looking up into the kitchen (will be cathedral) from the basement.

The other huge project we started was landscaping! My buddy Ali is a fantastic gardener and informed us of the huge plant sales that happen this time of year. As much as we wanted to wait until spring...we knew we could save some major dough and there is going to be a lot of "wait time" in the next few weeks between inspections that will allow us to pick away at it. Speaking of picking away, I REALLY wanted these bushed out of the front yard and started using a hedge trimmer and shovel before my dad showed up and showed me the easy way ;) Within 30 minutes, we had these all pulled out with the truck. And it was awesome.

On Friday morning, Ali and I drove out to Countryside Greenhouse and she gave me the confidence I needed to tackle this yard. I think my biggest complaint about the Union house was the yard because I always felt so defeated...it already had an established aesthetic that I didn't really care for and I had no idea what anything was or how to care for it. This place literally has no landscaping, so a blank canvas was really exciting.

So, 3 carts later....we had a mobile Jurassic Park in Ali's car as she drove down Lake Michigan Drive with plants in her lap!

photo (46).JPG

I spent the weekend digging out grass (which was not a light job) and planted as I went. We had SO many compliments from the neighbors who have been excited to see all the changes. I'll have to post some pics tomorrow with these babies in the ground!

As my last day of staycation, I was happy to throw some real clothes on and attend my (half)niece(in-law), Laura's baby shower. She was stunning as usual and I can't wait to meet baby Elliot! I also spent time with all the wonderful women in the family and got to meet my great-nephew, Holden. He is SUCH a doll!

It was also my sister, Alicia's 24th birthday! We drove around in the convertible singing our faces off before landing at Uccello's for dinner.

So, that wraps up two weeks of moving and demolition! As productive as it has been, I really miss my job and co-workers and am looking forward to going back tomorrow! To keep the progress moving, we will be there every night after work, so stay tuned for more posts! I will try and do them daily, but forgive me if I skip a few ;)

DAY SIX: NEW LAYOUT

Today, we made some layout decisions to the kitchen and bath! It definitely wasn't what we originally had in mind, but I think we will be super happy with the changes.

DAY SIX

Whew! What a day. I'm really enjoying the demo process and my sister lending a helping hand definitely makes it more fun. I think I owe her Spoonlickers for life once this is all said and done ;)

We started the day off removing the rest of the insulation and framing around the current stairs so that we can hopefully get a floor in tomorrow!  We made some changes and decided to ditch the pantry idea and go for a larger bathroom instead. Yesterday, we made a decision to go with a cathedral ceiling and on a whim....decided to do the same with the kitchen!

My dad gave us a thumbs up that the house wouldn't fall down, so on his half hour trip to Lowes...we took down a ceiling and made an insulation sandbox.

And here it is all cleaned up! I am SO excited about the ceilings and can't wait to see it all opened up!

DAY FIVE

Oh, hey! Remember when there was a stove and refrigerator here yesterday?  Alicia and I made some major progress on the kitchen and closet today!

photo (37).JPG

I was SO SO excited to discover an angled ceiling where the bathroom is going to be! We have gone back and forth on a window for the bathroom, so skylights it is!

The picture shows the back of our current stairs to the basement which are now being closed off and becoming a master/main floor bath.

DAY FOUR

I'm still thanking my lucky stars I was able to take two weeks off of work to focus on the move and demolition because I sure as heck needed it!

Today started off a bit slow as we start to determine the best layout for our kitchen. IKEA cabinet sale runs until August 25, so we are on a semi-deadline to get those ordered. I also mentioned the termites...luckily my (future) brother in law is an Orkin man, so he was able to connect us with the right people to eliminate the little buggers.

They haven't caused any major damage and are pretty contained to one area of the basement which was great news. We are officially on schedule to have a full foundation and preventative treatment done over the next couple of weeks. Considering how smoothly everything has gone so far, we consider this a minor bump. Onward and upward!

Did I mention I have the best family and friends ever? We've enjoyed spending time with Ali and Ken as they have generously taken us on as roommates. There is nothing better than a nice hot shower and cozy room to come back to after a day in a war zone.

My sister Alicia also showed up with frozen yogurt and an extra helping hand. We tackled the worse project (the bathroom) and I will be happy to never see another piece of pink tile in my life.

My dad also came by to plug the pipes so we could take out the sinks and toilet. I think he had a pretty proud father moment as we walked through the door to greet both daughters with sledgehammers in hand. Who needs boys, anyway? ;)

Here is the bathroom progress we made today!

DAY THREE

Well, day three was not our most productive day. Everyone was pretty sore from Saturday, so we decided to take it easy and tackle the small tasks that stood in our way from moving forward. Unfortunately, our discovery of termites brought everything to a screeching halt....

Yeah, total bummer.  (but, read Day 4 for not-so-bad updates)

On the bright side, I found an amazing deal on a Jenn-Air stove on craigslist, so me and my sidekick, Ali took a road trip up to Big Rapids. It was a nice little get away from a not-so-fun day.

My dads girlfriend and I were also able to make some major progress on the overgrown beds. It's starting to look like someone actually lives here!

DAY TWO

First off, my friends and family are AMAZING. We are so lucky to have our dads that know how to execute our crazy ideas, a mom that loves to cook and kept us all fed while doing some major heavy lifting, my dads girlfriend (Connie) who made my overgrown garden look spectacular, our very good friends (Ali and Ken) who did so much of everything AND have taken us on as temporary roomates... and certainly not least, my grandparents who were so sweet to bring us a ton of food to keep everyone full for the next few days! We certainly could not have done this without any of them.

I had no idea that we would make so.much.progress in one day. So much, that I didn't even take pictures of all of it (I plan to do so today) Here is a list of what was accomplished:

  • All carpet pulled / Tack strips removed / Staples removed from hardwoods
  • All doors removed
  • Kitchen Cabinets Removed
  • Greenhouse Removed
  • Wall between Kitchen and Dining Room removed
  • Wall between closet and bath removed
  • Tile from bath removed (Almost)
  • Closet in hallway removed
  • Foyer gravel cleaned out
  • Overgrown landscaping removed

I think the most exciting for everyone was the removal of the wall between the kitchen and dining room. It made the biggest difference to have it all open!

photo (28).JPG
Day One

While we were busy moving out of the Union house during the day, we were able to spend lots of time at the Boston house at night working on our plans. We used painters tape to mask off which areas were going to be removed. Getting the staircase right was the biggest challenge because obviously,  once you cut a hole in the floor there is no turning back. We masked it off and spent a lot of time walking around it and adjusting the size until it was just right. All of the walls with x's are coming down to make for an open layout and cleaner lines.

photo (26).JPG

So, day one (Friday, August 9) it was just my dad and I for most of the day, so we kept it pretty simple. I started tearing carpet out in the bedrooms to find BEAUTIFUL un-touched hardwood floors underneath. Hooray!

When Brandon got home, he and my dad began tackling the stairs. We ran into a pretty big problem when we realized they didn't line up where we expected in the basement and left the landing running into the wall. After many debates, we decided to simply flip them in the other direction. Not ideal, but ultimately will no longer have to worry about the landing area being up to code.

photo (27).JPG

Brandon also started taking the tile out of the foyer area....holy huge mess. Our foyer went from ugly to gravel pit in about an hour.

We decided to put the stairs on hold until we took out the walls on the first floor to get a better idea how much space we had to work with....stay tuned.

The Plans

Brandon and I have always loved homes with clean lines, an open layout, and something we could transform to be a better fit for us. We looked at 2 houses and knew that this was the one. It has so much potential and the minute the offer was accepted, we began transforming the layout. The biggest hurdle was in the back of the house where the stairs are located, so we made the decision to move them! Here are the before and after plans:
